Having participated in Yung Kwong Society's volunteer service for several years, I would like to say three thank yous.
Because so many elders have given us the opportunity to do something meaningful for them.
On the surface, volunteers are the ones who give and the elderly are the ones who receive and benefit. But in fact, volunteers have much more to gain. From my conversations with the elderly, I have heard a lot of colorful life stories or stories of ups and downs. Some of them have specialties, such as calligraphy, poetry, general knowledge of Chinese medicine or electrical maintenance, etc., which have enhanced my knowledge.
Moreover, when I see the elderly happy in various activities, I am also happy myself.
On the other hand, when we do something that is helpful to others, we will naturally feel a sense of "worthiness and meaning". Many of our volunteers feel that their lives are fuller and more meaningful after joining the service work, and they are more active, positive and happy.
So, should we actually thank all the elderly for making our lives more fulfilling and happy?
Our volunteers work together and see each other more often, and many of us have become friends outside of work. It is one of the joys to meet for tea, dinner or a trip from time to time.
Apart from happiness, there is also concern. Take myself as an example, a few years ago, due to health problems, I was in and out of the hospital many times and was hospitalized for a long time. However, many volunteers and friends often came to visit and care for me, and some even brought soups or dishes to offer their sympathy, which was really touching and appreciated.
Another kind of happiness comes from "team spirit". Here is an example that I have a deep understanding of. I once participated in the "White Flower Oil Charity Sale" at the Lunar New Year Flower Market. The event lasted for five days, with volunteers taking turns to be on duty. There were volunteers trying their best to sell to the passers-by in front of the stalls; there were those who appealed at the back of the stage at the top of their voices; there were those who sang songs; there were those who made up their own lame gag to attract the passers-by; there were those who went to the end of the street to intercept the donations; and there were those who came to support the market with medication packs, as the chairperson and vice-chairpersons had been screaming for many days, and they had become mute and had become hoarse. I really like and appreciate the feeling of working with one heart and soul, which can be seen in other services of Yung Kwong Society.
I deeply feel that "a group of people working together for the same goal, trying to do a good job" is teamwork, and that's happiness.
Therefore, I would like to thank all the volunteers who have worked with me in the past! I would also like to thank my friends and volunteers who cared about me and brought me joy! May all the kind-hearted volunteers be healthy and happy, and be able to continue to serve the elderly!
(Volunteers, if you were too busy to participate in the Lunar New Year Flower Market last year, I suggest you try your best to come and help out in the coming year. It's very exciting to contribute your strengths and talents to build up the team spirit together!)
Yung Kwong Society provides a "platform" that brings together donors, volunteers and elders from all walks of life to do something meaningful together. By "Yung Kwong Society", I mean the group of planners who founded the organization and have been running the charity for 20 to 30 years.
Some of them are responsible for liaison with the business sector, the film industry or other celebrities; some plan fund-raising activities; some co-ordinate activities for the elderly; some plan objectives; some are responsible for administrative operations; and many more are actual workers who go directly to the homes of the elderly to serve them.
It is only because of their dedication, time and goodwill that this charitable platform has been established. Therefore, should we not thank these behind-the-scenes members and the Chairman's Panel for their long-term commitment?
I felt very helpless when I accompanied some elderly people who had bad smells in their homes and did not accept the help of volunteers to clean up their homes. I like to do is the Yung Kwong Society Friends of the Sunset Service by volunteers throughout the one-stop work process, after the completion of a seamless and thankful and wash my soul, because some cases are the Social Welfare Department police or medical social workers may be more complex referral volunteers work hard to help some of the unsupported elderly deceased so that the deceased can rest assured that they will go to a name and a monument (sea burials are excluded), some of the hard work is worthwhile!
After more than eight years of volunteering at Yung Kwong Society I was given the ability to .......
