Introduction to the Meal Assistance Program

According to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong people live a very long life. In 2014, the average life expectancy of males was 81 years and that of females was 87 years. Generally speaking, physical functioning decreases with age. At the same time, the self-care ability of the elderly also declines with age as their physical functioning deteriorates, thus requiring more care services, such as meal delivery and accompanying to medical consultations under the Integrated Home Care Services (IHCS).

The demand for care services for the elderly in Wong Tai Sin District far exceeds the number of places provided by welfare organizations, resulting in the phenomenon of "too many hands, not enough gruel". At present, the elderly have to wait for a long time for services, and they are unable to receive appropriate care immediately. In view of this, we have launched the "Meals on Wheels" campaign to support the frail elderly living alone who are in urgent need of care or who do not have enough support. Volunteers deliver lunch boxes to the needy on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, or buy food for them in advance. We hope that the Meals on Wheels program can fill the gap in social services.
